WHAT TO EXPECT IN FLORENCE?

Language: Italian is the official language, and knowing a few simple phrases like per favore (please) and grazie (thank you) will come in handy (thanks). In tourist locations, basic English is spoken, but don’t anticipate proficiency from everyone you meet.

Currency: Italy, like much of Europe, utilizes the euro. Before you leave, check with your bank to see how foreign ATM conversion works and if there is a fee for using your debit card. Most of the time, it will be a better rate than traditional currency exchange offices.

Credit Cards and Banks: Credit and debit cards are accepted by many establishments. Keep cash on hand, though, in case you come across a tiny store that only accepts cash or has a credit card minimum. Unless you’re going out of town, you’ll never be far from an ATM, so avoid carrying large amounts of cash.

Weather: The weather will be hot and humid from June to August. Expect hot afternoons in the 90s, and many places don’t have air conditioning, so you’ll be sweating. In the meanwhile, you can expect cold nights in the 30s over the winter.

Best Time to Visit: Spring and fall are gorgeous in Italy. The city is full of life and endless sunshine. Read more about The Best Time to Travel to Italy.

Safety: While Florence is one of the safest cities in the world, do be aware of the possibility of pickpocketing and petty theft.
